What is Ihram?

Ihram is a state of ritual consecration, marked by specific acts and attire, which pilgrims assume before beginning the Hajj or Umrah. It represents a state of purity, humility, and devotion to Allah.

Rules of Ihram

Intention (Niyyah): Before donning the Ihram garments, it is essential to make a sincere intention for Hajj or Umrah.

Talbiyah: Upon entering the state of Ihram, pilgrims recite the Talbiyah, a declaration of their intention and devotion to Allah. The Talbiyah is recited in Arabic (“Labbayka Allahumma labbayk).

Prohibited Acts: While in Ihram, pilgrims must abstain from certain actions known as the prohibitions of Ihram. These include cutting hair or nails, using scented products, engaging in marital relations, hunting, and covering the head for men.

Attire: The attire of Ihram consists of two simple, white garments for men and loose, modest clothing for women. For men, it typically includes two unstitched pieces of cloth – one wrapped around the waist to cover the lower body (izar), and the other draped over the upper body (rida). Women are encouraged to wear modest, loose-fitting clothing that covers the body, with their heads left uncovered but with a hijab.

Purification: Before entering the state of Ihram, pilgrims should perform a ceremonial bath (Ghusl) to cleanse themselves physically and spiritually.
